Original Ascott chamber returns to HQ 30 years after it was made

Original Ascott chamber returns to HQ 30 years after it was made – and it’s still in perfect working order

Original Ascott chamber returns to HQ 30 years after it was madeA corrosion test chamber manufactured 30 years ago by Ascott Analytical Ltd has arrived back at headquarters – in perfect working order.

One of the manufacturer’s long-standing customers, a US-based aerospace and power generation company, wanted to upgrade its old salt spray chamber, used to test the climate resistance of its products.

Ascott sold the company a new model and brought the original back to its factory, 30 years on, the chamber – complete with PATT testing stickers and service records – was still in perfect working order.

It was due to be re-calibrated this April, for another year of daily use.

Ascott Analytical Visited by Tamworth MP, Christopher Pincher

Ascott Analytical was recently visited by Tamworth MP, Christopher Pincher.

A boardroom discussion on Brexit, the skills shortage in the engineering sector, the importance of innovation and R&D and Ascott’s global export success took place before Mr Pincher toured the factory and met key staff.

He was shown Ascott’s latest walk-in corrosion test rooms – used by the automotive and aerospace industry to test to stringent European standards the durability of car and aircraft components.

He was impressed with the company’s recently-patented Mag-Drive technology, which turns an oscillating spray bar inside each of the chambers without the need to breach the chamber wall, containing the corrosive salt spray.

And he trialled the multi-lingual communication capabilities of the chambers, developed for Ascott’s key markets in India, China, Japan, and Europe.

The group discussed the recent leadership vote at Westminster and the Brexit deal being tabled.

Mr Pincher revealed his constituency office had been overwhelmed by emails and phone calls from constituents, urging him to back Theresa May and support her deal.

He said it would be “corrosive” to stage a second referendum and heralded Tamworth as a “community-focused” area with excellent transport links, making it an attractive base for manufacturers like Ascott.

As he toured the factory, he met long-standing staff and discussed the benefits of apprenticeships, praising the firm for its track record in innovation and impressive staff retention rates.

And he asked what Ascott was doing, in a shrinking manufacturing climate, to attract new blood.

Chris Gates, a “passionate advocate” of apprenticeships and contributor to the 2018 Manufacturing Parliamentary Review, said: “There’s a responsibility on firms to address the problem.

“The manufacturing base has shrunk, but it’s from the big smokestack industries to companies like us, smaller, high-tech manufacturing firms employing 30 or 40 people.

“We’ve got really talented designers here and excellent staff on the floor and we, and others like us, need to shout about it.”

Mr Pincher added: “Ascott really is a hugely impressive company.

“It’s fascinating to see the work you’re doing in so many diverse markets right across the world. I wish you every success.”

The main aims of the Review are to demonstrate how organisations or individuals have become outstanding leaders in their field and how they have responded to challenges within the industry, sharing best practice as a template for reform.

Change to Midi Unit Design

In order to improve chamber performance Ascott is changing the design of the ACC112 Midi Dehumidification Unit.

New Midi Unit Piping, Change to Midi Unit Design

The design change impacts the size, the type of piping used for air inlet and outlets, the design of the interface, and some new features have been added.

The new design utilises rigid piping instead of flexible hoses for air inlet and outlet, this will reduce the potential for water collection in the pipe, and also stops the pipes from sagging.

New Midi Unit Piping and Interface

This change improves the on-going performance of the unit, ensures more consistent results, and will improve lifetime reliability of the system.  The interface has also been improved as part of this design change.

The new ACC112 also has a longer body, which has been lengthened to improve aesthetics / alignment with the chamber (the front panel sits in line with the front of the chamber), this has a significant extra benefit in that if a system is ordered with a psychrometric humidity measurement system this will now be installed inside the Midi Unit instead of being installed as a side mounted module on the chamber.

New Midi Unit

The Midi Unit has been upgraded with the addition of side mounted refrigeration gauges, making it much easier to monitor refrigeration pressures and control the humidity generation atomiser.
